After devoting his life to art, a grandfather from south Norfolk has been nominated for an award.

Nicholas Simington, 83, has been shortlisted for the prestigious Artist of the Year award, run by Artists and Illustrators magazine.

Now in its sixth year, the award has never been won by an artist of Mr Simington's age.

The father-of-two said: 'I am delighted and honoured to have been shortlisted for artist of the year. I've always had great support from galleries and artists in this region.

'It's not the X Factor, but who knows, maybe the public vote will enable me to crown a lifetime in painting with a great honour like Artist of the Year.'

The grandfather of two paints using oils and gouache, in a studio at the back of his Old Buckenham home where he lives with his wife of more than 50 years, Barbara.

He has exhibited locally and nationally, and has paintings on the BBC website and in the National Collection. His son, Aiden, said: 'Painting is his everything. Wherever we go he has his camera and his sketchbook with him.

'If we are out, he will ask if we can stop the car because he has seen something which has given him an idea.

'He is very fortunate that he has a wife who is very supportive.'

Mr Simington worked as a draughtsman until he was accepted as a mature student into the Glasgow School of Art at the age of 38.

He studied alongside Robbie Coltrane and after working as an art teacher in schools, he moved to Norfolk in the 1970s where he devoted his life to his artwork, while Mrs Simington earned the money to raise their two children, working as a teacher.

Aiden added: 'The secret to his success is his long-suffering wife.

'We are all so proud of him. I can't think of anyone more deserving of this prize.'

As well as a judges' winner, there is also a public vote for the People's Award, with voting continuing until January 3, when the winners will be announced.
