Staff at the Dereham branch of the Nottingham Building Society have raised over £600 for charity following a recent fire in a nearby village.

A thatched cottage in Rockland All Saints, near Attleborough, caught fire just over two weeks ago and needed more than 70 firefighters to tackle the blaze.

After hearing about the news, staff contributed to a BBQ and live music fundraiser and put together a luxury hamper which was then auctioned off for nearly £100.

Branch Manager Charley McIlwhan, whose father is a retired firefighter, said: 'The fire was big news locally so we decided to play our part in thanking the fire service for the role they play when attending incidents like this and to show our support for the village.

'We were delighted that the hamper helped add almost £100 to a very pleasing £600 pot. It's money that's going to a very good cause.'

The cash was then given to the firefighters family charity.
