A train from Norwich to London Liverpool Street was damaged after striking an 'unknown object' on the line, Greater Anglia said.
The 8.30pm service hit the obstruction at the London suburb of Harold Wood, and engineers were called to investigate.
Greater Anglia tweeted at around 10.45pm '#HaroldWood - the 20:30 Norwich-Liverpool St has struck an unknown object which has caused damage to the train. An engineer is en route'.
Safety checks were carried out and a spokesman said all lines were reopened by 11pm.
