'I wanted to make a real listener's album - something you could put on in the car for a road trip.'

In 2010, Norfolk singer-songwriter Nina Baker had never performed a live set as a solo artist.

But four years on, the talented songwriter is a far more assured act, with headline festival shows, an MTV award nomination and supporting slots for Ella Eyre and Robbie Williams under her belt - and a new debut album to boot.

The release of Quite Frankly is the result of two years hard work - and an emotional farewell to a family member.

Nina, who was born in Norwich but now lives in Warwickshire, said: 'Unfortunately my grandad Frank Baker passed away while I was recording the album. A lot of the tracks are written with him in mind, as I wanted to do something which would keep his memory alive.'

Inspired by the smooth tones of Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone, the self-produced album is a 'piano-led fusion of pop, rock, jazz and classical' - with Nina's distinctive vocals at the forefront.

The 13-track CD races from the upbeat Little Fibs and Game You Play, to power ballads including When I'm Not With You and Breaking Every Rule - although Nina names Clown as her favourite track.

'It does stand out for me. Not only because of the lyrical content but most importantly because it really highlights my classical side.'

The core of the album was recorded at the world-famous Rockfield Sutdios in Monmouth, where Nina played on Freddie Mercury's piano.

'It's been an amazing experience, but I've been a real perfectionist about it. I think people are less likely to buy albums these days - they want to buy singles, so I was determined to make something that would be a real listener's album,' she said.

Nina attended Sewell Park College and City College Norwich, before moving to Wymondham.

'I'm travelling everywhere, all around the country - but my family home is still in Wymondham so I do come back quite a lot to visit. I still think of myself as a Norfolk girl.'
