Two members of a Norfolk rescue charity have vowed to complete a fundraising walk which they had to abandon when they themselves needed rescuing.

Philip Hill and Josh Hutcheon set off to walk 72 miles from Hunstanton to Great Yarmouth carrying a stretcher to raise funds for Norfolk Lowland Search and Rescue (NorLSAR).

But the pair got caught out in severe weather on the night of August 8.

NorLSAR chairman Paul Webbers said: 'They were getting absolutely hammered. Walking on shingle wasn't much fun either.

'It wasn't just very wet, they were exposed and, with the wind and rain, were quickly getting very cold. Their health and safety was our main concern.'

A Norfolk 4x4 Response support vehicle went and picked the pair up from Salthouse beach to dry out and get some rest and they resumed their walk from Mundesley on Saturday morning.

But the tough seashore walk took its toll. Mr Hill, 31, from Hethersett, suffered a knee injury, and Mr Hutcheon, 24, from Norwich, had painful blisters.

Their injuries meant they were only able to hobble segments of the final 30km to Yarmouth, arriving on Saturday evening.

'For their efforts so far the boys have raised £727 of their £1,500 target towards NorLSAR funds and are determined to complete the sections of the walk they missed when fully fit again,' said Mr Webber.

'It just shows how dangerous and challenging the coast is - but it looks so demure.'
