Dave Fletcher prepares for another marathon moped ride in aid of a charity close to many hearts.

If you round the country anti-clockwise, it's 43 miles longer than going the other way.

Ask Dave Fletcher – aka the Fat Bloke on a Moped – who's setting off to ride all 3,500 miles of it on his trusty 'ped, to raise money for a breast cancer charity.

Mr Fletcher, 41, and slightly slimmer companion Kevin Rooney, 18, will be leaving their local, the Old White Bell in Southery, near Downham Market, on June 25.

The pair expect to cover 150 miles a day, meaning the ride will take them around three weeks.

The anti-clockwise route is 43 miles longer – possibly because of roundabouts and one-way systems encountered along the way.

Mr Fletcher has worked out the fuel bill for the trip for the two mopeds.

'We should get 80 to 100 to the gallon – it depends how windy it is,' he said.

Today, he collected a cheque for 608.77 from the Marshall Toyota car dealership, which is sponsoring the ride.

Phil Saunders, area general manager of Marshalls, said: 'Marshall Motor Group prides itself on working in the community. We're supporting this because it's a good cause.'

As well as selling cars, the King's Lynn Toyota dealership, at Scania Way, near the Hardwick Roundabout, hosted a WI meeting recently, where Mr Saunders heard of the work of Keeping Abreast – a charity which helps women who have had mastectomies.

Mr Fletcher's wife, Claire, had a double mastectomy last year, after a routine check-up revealed pre-cancerous cells.

A round-Norfolk ride last summer raised 2,600 for Keeping Abreast.

Nineteen B&Bs around the country have offered accommodation, meaning all sponsorship money will go to the charity.

Mr Fletcher and Mr Rooney are looking for other riders to join them on the final stage of their journey, from Great Yarmouth to Southery on

Saturday, July 16. See the Fat Bloke website in the links above for more details.
