Neither of the Norwich MPs was among the 282 who were listed tonight on the Labour Party website as having nominated Gordon Brown for the party's leadership.

The name of Charles Clarke was absent, even though he recently said that he would be willing to serve in a cabinet led by Mr Brown. And Dr Gibson has nominated left-winger John McDonnell. He is a declared supporter of Mr Brown, but also wants a leadership contest.

Waveney MP Bob Blizzard has nominated Mr Brown, but Yarmouth MP Tony Wright has not done so, despite the fact that he used to be a parliamentary private secretary or ministerial aide at the Treasury. Neither he nor Mr Clarke has nominated Mr McDonnell.

In the contest for Labour's deputy leadership, Dr Gibson has nominated backbencher Jon Cruddas who is regarded as the most left-wing of the six candidates.

Mr Blizzard has nominated justice minister Harriet Harman, and Mr Wright education secretary Alan Johnson. Mr Clarke has not nominated anyone.
