This was the dramatic scenes that confronted firefighters called to a wildfire that swept across 60 acres with flames close to the Norfolk-Suffolk border fanned by winds.
Twelve fire crews from across Norfolk and Suffolk were called in to fight the major fire which broke out at 2.15pm yesterday on fields next to the A143 at Hinderclay.
Norfolk crews from Diss, Harleston, Long Stratton and Thetford joined Suffolk firefighters from stations including Bury St Edmunds, Newmarket and Mildenhall to tackle the flames and stop them spreading to nearby buildings.
Strong winds helped drive the blaze across 60 acres of standing crops and stubble.
Teams used equipment including an off-road Unimog to isolate the fire and stop it spread to nearby fields and buildings.
Trevor Hill, station commander with Suffolk Fire Service, said: 'The wind has picked up and helped fan the flames making it more difficult to deal with.
'Fire can spread fast with the wind behind it, but it is out now and we have two crews staying on damping down. It's been a hectic few weeks and we would urge the public to continue to be extra vigilant.'
