Colin Manning says it is an 'absolute honour' to be in the role and is very much looking forward to the year ahead.

He is particularly enthusiastic about meeting the people from across the area, and doing what he can to inspire and help others.

Mr Manning, of Roydon, near King's Lynn, said: 'My aim is to get out there, particularly into schools, and do my best to raise the aspirations of young people. I want youngsters to realise that they don't need to go to university to do well for themselves; not everybody is going to be the prime minister, or a surgeon.'

He added: 'Everyone has their own strengths, and I want to encourage people to build on their strengths, and excel in the areas they're good at.

'And whatever it is they do in life – be proud.'

A retired policeman, Mr Manning became involved in politics a few years after moving to the area from Kent.

Since 2007, he has been a parish councillor, a borough councillor for Heacham since 2011 and vice-chairman of the resources and performance panel and the licensing committee.

He and his wife Julie have been together for 46 years and have two children and two grandchildren.

His chosen charity is Bridge for Heroes, which supports veterans living in King's Lynn and west Norfolk.

Outgoing mayor, Barry Ayres, said: 'I wish Colin every success for his year ahead.'

David Whitby, who represents the Clenchwarton Ward, near King's Lynn, will serve as the deputy mayor.
