Revised proposals for a controversial new superstore in Norwich have been lodged which could see the roof of the shop covered with grass.

Discount supermarket Lidl wants to build the store in Bishop Bridge Road, close to Ketts Hill roundabout.

Plans were originally lodged in 2014, but ran into opposition because of concerns it would add to more traffic on Ketts Hill and Riverside Road.

In December, the store submitted revised plans to Norwich City Council, but that also sparked objections from people living nearby.

They raised particular concerns over the way traffic would enter and exit the site and feared congestion would be even worse on days when Norwich City are at home.

However, Norfolk County Council – the highways authority – responded to consultation to say, with some modifications, it would not object to the scheme.

Lidl has now lodged another set of revised proposals to the city council, addressing concerns such as the arrangement of the car parking and location of the plant compound.

Another revision is that the 26,622 sq ft building would have a roof of grass, to address concerns about views from Ketts Hill and nearby.

But people living nearby are still raising concerns. Objector Anthony Porter, who lives in Bishop Bridge Road, wrote to City Hall to say: 'This further revision to the proposal does not address the fundamental shortcomings that both I and others have highlighted.

'The access to the site still retains a right turn on exit which is a terrible proposal with regard to traffic congestion.'

Lidl previously said its own postal survey of the proposals before the latest revisions showed more than 76pc of people who replied supported the proposed new store.

Just under 850 people filled in the survey.

The site is where the Value Car Centre is based.

The Value Car Centre previously said, if planning permission was granted, Lidl would buy the land and the company would continue selling cars at another site in the city.
