It may look like a humble sausage roll, but it could herald a new push to put the Brecks on the map as a unique destination for food lovers.

The Brecks Sausage Roll is the result of three years of experimentation, tweaking and sourcing local food at CoCoes café at Strattons Hotel in Swaffham.

The culinary masterpiece was finally unleashed at a Norfolk tourism event held in Norwich last week.

The recipe contains equal amounts of meat and vegetables, and includes rare breed pork sausage meat from Impson Butchers in Swaffham, black pudding from the Fruit Pig Company in Emneth, potatoes from Heygate Farms in Swaffham, vegetables from the Elveden Estate, and herbs from the grounds of Strattons.

CoCoes manager Maggie Cooper said: 'People have said it is the best sausage roll they have ever had. They often try to work out what vegetables are in it, and it's the parsnips that usually throw them. They give it the sweetness.'

She added that she had been experimenting with different recipes since the café opened three years ago, and had tried different varieties of pork, apples and herbs.

Strattons manager Vanessa Scott described the delicacy, which will change subtly throughout a 12-month cycle, as 'a sausage roll for all seasons'.

She said: 'Because there has been very little written about the Brecks, people don't appreciate the food offer there is.

'I think it has a really important part to play and it has not really been talked about and that's something that Maggie has tried to do, playing her part to showcase the food.'

Swaffham mayor Terry Jennsion said: 'I think it's a fantastic idea.

'I'm certainly going down there before the week's out to sample one. It's going to be unique to us as the Brecks and it's lovely we have people like that in the town.'
