People living in Norwich have been given extra time to sign up to an energy scheme which could cut their fuel bills.

Norwich's Big Switch and Save has been extended until 18 November, meaning people now have another month to join.

The news comes as consumer groups predict that the UK's major energy suppliers will follow energy giant SSE's lead in raising domestic bills.

So far, 1,350 people have signed up to the current round of Big Switch and Save, the council-run collective switching scheme.

The free scheme sees Norwich City Council works directly to negotiate a group deal with the energy providers on behalf of residents who have signed up.

Out of the 4,478 local residents who registered in previous rounds, 73 per cent were offered a saving. The average saving per household was around £164 for a year – with one household saving £501.

The Norwich scheme has delivered at least £110,000 worth of savings so far.

Councillor Mike Stonard, cabinet member for environmental strategy, said: 'Council-run collective switching schemes like this one can make energy bills more affordable. All people have to do is sign up and we'll do the rest.'

Switch and Save officers will be at the Spooky City event at the Forum on October 31, between 2pm and 5pm. Consumers should bring a recent energy bill.
