Robert Beales, 73, and Anouska Wright, 38, of separate addresses in Victoria Terrace in the town, were arrested on August 13 last year after police went to Beales' address to carry out a warrant.

Officers from the Lowestoft-based Scorpion East team raided the home about 7.50pm and found Beales and Wright in the kitchen area. On the kitchen worktop police found a quantity of heroin in various stages of preparation – including balls of heroin, piles of the drug on a mirror and 26 prepared wraps. The drugs were later found to have a street value of more than £2,500.

Four mobile phones and over £1,400 in cash were also seized from the property.

Beales and Wright were arrested on suspicion of possession of the class A drug with intent to supply and were both subsequently charged with this offence. They both appeared before magistrates in Norwich on Saturday, August 15 where they were remanded in custody.

Officers from Lowestoft CID and the financial investigation team then continued with inquiries and found that Beales, who was an unemployed pensioner, had paid regular cash amounts into a building society account totalling more than £26,000 in a ten month period between October 2014 and August 2015.

Wright, meanwhile, had paid in more than £4,000 to her account in less than a month between July 16, 2015 and August 3, 2015.

The evidence gathered was secured and Beales and Wright both later pleaded guilty to the charge.

Robert Beales appeared at Ipswich Crown Court last Friday (January 22), and was jailed for five years and eight months. Anouska Wright appeared before Ipswich Crown Court today (Wednesday, January 27), and she has now been jailed for 28 months.

Police are now looking to recover thousands of pounds in cash from the pair via a Proceeds of Crime Act court hearing that will be held in due course.

Speaking afterwards, Det Con Andrew Thawley, officer in the case, said; 'Despite his age, Robert 'Bob' Beales, continued to be involved in the supply of drugs in Lowestoft, as evidenced by the drugs found on the day of the warrant and the apparent financial activity on his building society account.

'In interview he answered the vast majority of questions with 'no comment', failing to give any explanation for the money or the drugs found. Wright gave a no comment interview too but the evidence against both was sufficient to ensure a conviction, leading to them both pleading guilty.

'Police in Lowestoft continue to pro-actively target those believed to be involved in the supply of class A drugs and the sentences given reflect how seriously the courts treat dealing and supply offences.'
