A new mayor elect has been chosen for Thetford for the year 2014/15.

Long-serving councillor Sylvia Armes was selected at a meeting of Thetford Town Council on Tuesday.

Mrs Armes, who has also served as a Labour Breckland councillor for the town, will take over from Stuart Wright, mayor for 2013/14.

A mayor making ceremony and annual town meeting will take place on May 6 from 7pm at the town's Guildhall.

Mrs Armes has lived in Thetford for 54 years and previously worked for Norfolk County Council and Eccles Hall School.

She first served on the town and district councils in 1999 for four years.

She also serves as a trustee of the Keystone Development Trust and on the patient forum committee for School Lane surgery.
