A pair of spelling mistakes has added to frustration felt over a diversion that is set to be in place for three weeks.

Signs are in place to redirect traffic as Anglian Water (AW) fixes a collapsed sewer on Hempstead Road, Holt.

The diversions have already prompted calls from Sanders Coaches managing director Charles Sanders to change the route, amid fears about lorries struggling to pass each other on Coronation Road.

Now locals have noticed that one of the signs includes Hempstead written as Hamsted and 'maintenance' incorrectly spelt as 'maintance'.

Jono Read, Labour's spokesman for Holt, said there had been appeals to Norfolk County Council to provide better signage for lorries trying to access the industrial estate.

He said the additional sign at the end of Hempstead Road contained the two mistakes, and said there was 'still not' adequate signage for the diversions.

He added: 'We have been informed that the work from Anglian Water and, consequently, the road closure from Norfolk County Council will continue on the Hempstead Road for the first two weeks in August.

'To rub further salt into the wounds for residents and businesses the council has put up a sign and not even spelt the road name correctly.

'The industrial estate is an important area for business in the town with lorries frequently using this road. It is not going to help these businesses that alternative routes have not been clearly identified.'
