The new Lord Mayor of Norwich spoke of his pride after following in the footsteps of his father to be appointed to the civic honour.

Labour councillor Keith Driver was elected to the post for 2013/14 by fellow Norwich City Councillors at a ceremony in City Hall today.

The Lakenham councillor, who has worked as a butcher, floor polisher at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, farmer, roofer, demolition specialist, and constructed a lion enclosure at Banham Zoo, said he was proud to represent Norwich.

His father, Alan Driver, was Lord Mayor of Norwich in 1981/82.

'It's a great honour to become Lord Mayor of the fine city of Norwich, my hometown. With a history of Mayors dating back centuries, I'm proud to be given this responsibility. I'm looking forward to all the events and special occasions this year, including the Lord Mayor's Celebrations in July,' he said.

Former Anglia TV MD Graham Creelman, who is chairman of the Norwich University of the Arts and Norwich Writers' Centre, was elected as Sheriff of Norwich for the year.

The new Lord Mayor and Sheriff also announced that their chosen civic charity appeal for the year is Leeway, which provides specialist support for people suffering domestic abuse in Norfolk and Suffolk.

Thanks were also given to outgoing Lord Mayor Ralph Gayton and Sheriff John Jennings.
