The town council decided a mayor elect was required this year as there are many forthcoming commemorations planned for the town.

Mrs Ross said: 'Next year is a big year for Downham Market and I'm looking forward to the possibility of being Mayor.

'It will be the 40th anniversary of Downham Market Twinning Club and our continued links with the French town of Civray is certainly something to be celebrated.'

It is likely another vote will be called before the Mayoral Year to confirm the position, and to also determine Deputy Mayor.

While most councillors were supportive of the move to vote a mayor elect, others voiced concerns at the town's last full council meeting.

John Doyle said: 'I don't think this vote for mayor elect is necessary.

'From what I've heard, it was done when the mayor was a prominent businessman who needed the extra time in advance to arrange their business calendars.'

He added: 'Any vote that happens now isn't binding; the only one that is happens in May.'

But current Mayor John Fox said: 'We also have a situation here where the deputy [Frank Daymond] does not wish to stand for mayor next year.'
