And, the summer of fun will continue the following weekend, when a circus spectacular comes to the city.

Thousands of people take to the streets of Norwich to take part in the Lord Mayor's Celebrations each year, with this year's event running from Friday, July 6 to Sunday, July 8.

The Lord Mayor's Procession, when colourful floats and characters parade through the city centre's streets, will take place on Saturday. July 7 and will have a circus theme.

The 2018 procession theme ties in with the fact that Norwich, along with Great Yarmouth, is one of the six Cities of Circus that will this year be the focus of the Circus250 anniversary celebrations.

Helen Selleck, Norwich City Council's events and culture manager, said: 'This year's Lord Mayor's Celebration is shaping up to be really special.

'Everyone involved is really embracing the Circus 250 theme and there will be a great mix of live entertainment that everyone can enjoy around the city centre.'

As well as the procession, events include a parade of puppet elephants, the Gas Hill Gasp, where cyclists pound up the city's steepest hill, The Lord Mayor's 5k road race, music, theatre, comedy, food and fireworks.

And, the weekend after the Lord Mayor's Celebrations, a city park will play host to the Chapelfield Summer Circus.

From Thursday, July 12 to Sunday, July 15, Chapelfield Gardens will be the venue for events organised by Norwich-based Lost in Translation Circus.

They will present a big top style tent with a hand-picked selection of international contemporary circus shows, all appearing in Norwich for the first time.

The Circus250 celebrations highlight the city's circus heritage, including Norwich being the birthplace of Pablo Fanque, the first black British circus proprietor, whose circus was among the most popular in Victorian Britain.

Applications to sign up for a Lord Mayor's Procession float are now open and will close on June 15. For more information and to sign up for a float, visit www.norwich.gov.uk/LMP
