A semi-retired landlord has been sworn in as the new mayor of Great Yarmouth.

In the grand surroundings of the recently refurbished St George's Theatre, Great Yarmouth Borough Council formally voted for Councillor John Burroughs to take the mayoral chains from outgoing mayor Colleen Walker.

Councillor Burroughs, who owns the Apollo Tavern and previously ran the Lord Nelson in Gorleston, was born in Norwich and lived in Spain before moving to the east coast 13 years ago. The father-of-one, who is married to Jenny, became a councillor in 2005. He is an active member of the Haven Rotary Club, and served as their president in 2012.

Accepting the office last night, Councillor Burroughs said: 'Like Admiral Nelson once said, I am a Norfolk man and glory in being so.' He vowed to raise money for small charities and praise unsung heroes during his mayoral year.
