Blur drummer Dave Rowntree has said his election to University division in Norwich is 'humbling' and vowed to get the street lights turned back on.
Mr Rowntree, standing as a Labour candidate in the division for the Norfolk County Council elections, won a majority of 843 above his closest challenger, Conservative Gary Walsh.
Speaking after his victory, Mr Rowntree said: 'I stood on the strength of trying to get the street lights turned back on. They have turned the street lights off across the city, especially in the University ward where a lot of students live and a lot of people who work in the hospital live. 'I think it is ridiculous to turn the street lights off - it is unsafe and it doesn't save money.'
Mr Rowntree won 1,173 votes of the 1,997 cast, with a turnout of 36.8pc for the election. Mr Walsh gained 330 votes. Green candidate Lewis Martin got 257, Rob Lowe of UKIP, 109, and Lib Dem Toby Bennett 126.
