A plan to extend a landmark Cromer cliff top building and re-route a public footpath has been approved.

North Norfolk district councillors voted in favour of the changes to the former lookout and gun tower on east cliff during a planning meeting on Friday.

An application to change the building from a holiday home to a permanent dwelling was also approved.

The proposals, submitted by London designer Emily Readett-Bayley, include building a single-storey back extension with a glazed link and a replacement side extension. An existing footpath, which cuts through the middle of the property's garden, will be re-routed south to join a path through Warren Wood.

A number of objections were made to the scheme by local residents, who felt making the second world war building into a permanent home would create too much traffic on the access road. Concerns over the loss of a public footpath were also raised by the Open Spaces Society.

However, councillors felt the property would not generate excessive traffic and accepted the footpath had not been used for many years since the land around the property was fenced off.

Richard Shepherd said: 'I think it is nice to see the building used again and the extension is in keeping.'
