A council is offering to give an unwanted annexe building to a community organisation, if they can take it away.

The sectional building at North Norfolk District Council's Cromer headquarters is no longer needed and is set to be axed in a shake-up of the building which will also see moves to revamp reception and rent out office space.

But rather than just demolish the annexe the council is urging any community groups who could make us of it to contact the authority.

Leader Keith Johnson said: 'We are keen to offer it to any suitable organisation - which could be a sports club, youth football club, youth group or school.'

Property manager Tony Turner said the second-hand annexe was put up in 2005-6 to house the new Victory Housing Trust. After it moved to its own headquarters in 2009 the annexe has been used for disaster training, electoral services and staff showers.

While the 30-year-old front section was considered 'life expired' the rest, which was about half that age, had an estimated lifespan of 10 years although 'maintenance and repairs costs could increase significantly, says a report to Monday's cabinet meeting.

The reusable parts of the cement-rendered timber-framed building include a include a main section measuring 18m by 10m with four side rooms and main area.

Mr Turner said: 'If people wanted it as a classroom it would be fine, but may need to be reconfigured for other uses.'

Anyone taking it on would need to pay to have it lifted and trailered away.

Removing the annexe and reinstating the land will cost about 31,500 but the move will save the council 21,400 a year.

Staff currently working in there will be relocated in the main building, following a recent rejig of departments.

Four reception areas would be streamlined, and there is also scope to rent out spare space for about 30 desks to other 'public sector organisations', which would offset the overhead costs of the building.

Officers were currently approaching potential users, but none had yet been confirmed.

A previous review has looked at relocating the council from the head office, which is now more than 20 years old, to a smaller building which more matched its current workforce, but ruled it out as unviable.
