People worried the future of a Norwich post office will get the chance to quiz bosses when a public meeting over the branch's future is held next week.

Green Party Councillors in Town Close have organised the meeting with representatives from the Post Office as part of a campaign to keep a post office in Vauxhall Street, off Chapel Field Road.

The concerns have arisen because the existing sub-postmaster of the Vauxhall Street branch does not want to continue running it, prompting Post Office Ltd to invite applications to run the post office.

Two shops applied, the Vauxhall Street Pharmacy, which is next door to the existing premises and Hurn Chemist in Unthank Road.

Post Office bosses say the Unthank Road switch is their preferred choice, which has angered people who live in and around Vauxhall Street.

Labour county councillor Emma Corlett organised a protest rally outside the branch last week, which was attended by hundreds of people.

A petition started earlier this year by Penny Edwards, from Cambridge Street, has also garnered hundreds of signatures from people against the post office moving from Vauxhall Street.

And Green councillors hope the public will turn out in force at Monday's public meeting to make clear their concerns to bosses from the Post Office.

Green city councillor Ash Haynes said: 'This is the chance for residents to show why it is important to keep a post office in the Vauxhall Street area.

'The proposed move to Unthank Road will put it a half mile further away, or a 10-minute walk.

'Many of the people who rely on the current post office, particularly older people and those with mobility problems, will find it hard to go there.'

The public meeting will take place in the Vauxhall Centre from 6.30pm on Monday.
