It has been at the heart of the town for centuries - and now more events could be staged at the historic Market Cross in North Walsham.
The ancient structure is already the focal point at the town's annual Christmas lights switch-on.
Now a moveable stage is being created for use in the ancient structure as part of a possible move to make it more of a hub for entertainment.
The stage will also protect the cobbles in the Market Cross, which dates back to the 17th century.
North Walsham Town Council, which owns the Grade 1 listed building, has agreed to pay around £950 for the new stage as part of the first part of a renovation programme.
Work agreed with Heritage England includes restoring or replacing a plaque which has become worn.
Mayor Barry Hester said: 'The most likely way forward is put in a replacement plaque so the original can go in a museum.'
