The group - who have named themselves the Beccles Community Litter Pickers - held their first litter pick in March and this week enlisted the help of two Sir John Leman High School pupils.

Thirteen-year-old Sarah Playford and 15-year-old Patrick Day, who are both on the school council, joined the team armed with pickers and bin bags to clear up the area around their school in Ringsfield Road.

Sarah said: 'There is a lot more litter than I thought there would be. I am quite shocked.'

Each week the group targets a different area in the town, and four members have now adopted their own roads to keep tidy.

The team is also helped by youngsters completing the Duke of Edinburgh award.

And as well as bags of rubbish, the group has disposed of a bike frame, vacuum cleaner, double glazed units and various other large plastic items found dumped in the street.

Beccles mayor Hugh Taylor, who has been helping with the litter picks from the beginning, said: 'As we go back to areas where we have collected rubbish before the amount seems to be reducing which is good.

'We are working in conjunction with Waveney District Council who come and pick up the bags of rubbish for us and the police who we report things to when we find them.'

The group meets every Tuesday at 3pm and next week they will be meeting at Beccles Sports and Social Club car park to clear up The Avenue, skate park and the children's playground.

Caroline Topping, Waveney district councillor for Beccles South, who started the litter picks during her time as mayor, added: 'It's a success from our point of view because we have collected so many bags of rubbish, but it is a shame that the mess is there in the first place.'

The 1st Beccles Brownies group have also been working towards a badge on keeping litter off the streets and a display of their work has been put up in Beccles Library. The youngsters will be taking part in a litter pick later this month.

Details about the location of the weekly litter picks are published on the Beccles Town Council website, and anyone is welcome to join.
