Police have revealed that a holidaying couple who died in a boating tragedy on the Norfolk Broads were from Surrey.

The bodies of a man and a woman, both thought to be in their 40s, were recovered from the River Bure yesterday afternoon by divers, following an extensive search between Salhouse Broad and Wroxham Broad.

The search was instigated when the hire craft Admiral was not returned to the Le Boat yard at Horning as arranged at the end of the week.

When the vessel was found tethered to a tree in an inlet opposite Salhouse Little Broad, the woman's 13-year-old daughter was found on board alone. The girl is currently being supported by family members.

Home Office post-mortem examinations began this morning at the James Paget Hospital in Gorleston and more details are expected to be released later today – but police have confirmed they are not looking for anyone else in relation to the deaths.

Det Supt Jes Fry, of the joint Norfolk and Suffolk Major Investigation Team, who is overseeing the investigation, said: 'We continue to investigate this tragic event. Our main consideration is the welfare of the 13-year-old girl and whilst I cannot speculate on the circumstances surrounding the deaths before I have received the results of the post mortems, initial investigations confirm that we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.'

The river was re-opened to boating traffic last night but a seal remains where the boat was discovered.

Police officers in two cars were today still sealing off part of a boat-yard in Horning where the cruiser at the centre of a Broads tragedy continues to be examined.

Mystery remains as to how a family holiday on board the 38ft vessel Admiral ended in the deaths of two people.

Tom Heaffey, who works at Horning's Ferry Inn helping holidaymakers to moor outside, said one of his colleagues had seen the same boat moored opposite Salhouse Little Broad on Friday evening, with the family apparently enjoying an end-of-holiday barbecue.

Mr Heaffey said he remembered the boat stopping at the pub for a meal earlier on in the holiday. He said: 'There has been an atmosphere of shock in the village, especially last night after the discovery of the bodies, with people asking how it happened.'

Divers spent hours yesterday scouring the River Bure, between Wroxham Broad and Salhouse Broad, after the teenage girl was found alone in the boat at Salhouse Little Broad.

Norfolk Fire and Rescue service's search and recovery team recovered the body of the girl's mother shortly after 2pm yesterday and found the body of the woman's partner shortly after 4.30pm.

The boat was recovered and returned to the Le Boat base at Ferry View Road, Horning.

A spokesman for the company said: 'Le Boat can confirm that one of its holiday cruisers was involved in the tragic incident on the Norfolk Broads this weekend.

'Le Boat contacted the Broads Authority at 5pm on Saturday evening to alert them that a hire boat had not been returned to the site. A search was subsequently launched of the surrounding area.

'Le Boat continues to cooperate fully with the police in their enquiries. As the investigation is on-going, we cannot comment further on any details regarding this incident.

'Our thoughts are first and foremost with the family involved at this distressing time.'
