Land Rover lovers teamed up for a charity rally down Norfolk's back roads.

More than 200 enthusiasts turned out to take their 4x4s for a spin from Sandringham to Holkham, in a run organised by Norfolk fire service.

Stormy skies over the starting line seemed to suit the rugged rural icon. There were short and long-wheelbase models dating back to the 1980s on show, along with Defenders, Discoveries and the latest 17-plate Range Rovers.

Firefighters originally hoped 50 vehicles would turn out to help raise funds for the Fire Fighters Charity, with each paying £10 to take part in the run.

King's Lynn station manager Bob Ayers, one of the event organisers, said with the proceeds from a raffle he expected it to raise £2,500.

Those taking part were given a map and directions. Stop off points include exclusive access to Massingham Airfield, along with tea and a ford to negotiate at Creake Abbey en route to Holkham.

Mr Ayers and colleagues Grant Cotterell and Clive Wells at King's Lynn North Fire Station are all Land Rover enthusiasts and have taken part in similar charity events so they decided to arrange their own to support the Fire Fighters Charity.

Mr Cotterill said: 'Clive has owned Land Rovers for years but Bob and I are relative newcomers. We all enjoy driving the vehicles but I enjoy taking mine apart and putting it back together. Earlier this year I had a serious back problem and had to have major surgery.

'This meant that I wasn't able to drive my Series III or do any maintenance. My journey back to fitness is progressing well but I needed the support of The Fire Fighters Charity to help my recovery.'

Like many serving firefighters, Mr Cotterill makes regular donations to the charity via his pay.

'It is only when you experience first-hand the fantastic facilities and the focused and dedicated treatment the staff provide that you truly understand and appreciate its value, they have helped me in my journey to get back to operational fitness,' he said.

Margaret Dewsbury, chairman of Norfolk County Council's communities committee, said: 'It's fantastic that so many people have signed up to support this event.'
