Retailers in King's Lynn are signing up for a disability awareness month in the town.

Discover King's Lynn is teaming up with charity Scope to deliver a series of free activities with the Local People Programme.

On Tuesday, March 13, they will be hosting a disability confident customer service training course for business managers.

It aims to build managers' confidence and how to ensure a best practice approach to serving customers with both visible and non-visible disabilities. It also gives an insight into the role of attitudes and how they might affect staff when dealing with disabled people.

The following day there will be a session for people working in customer facing roles which aims to provide staff with the confidence, techniques, tools, skills and increased awareness to ensure a best practice approach when serving disabled customers.

Julia Ajayi, Scope's local people programme manager, said: 'It is fantastic to see such commitment from the retailers in King's Lynn to raising awareness about disability.

'Scope exists to make this country a place where disabled people have the same opportunities as everyone else and this kind of action is an important step towards this with the potential to make a real difference to the lives of disabled people and their families.'

Later in the month, on Saturday, March 17, there will be a sensory art and craft day in Vancouver Quarter

Chloe Yianni, Scope's coordinator for the local people programme in West Norfolk, said: 'It is amazing to see the hard work of local disabled people to raise awareness of disability being reflected in the actions of King's Lynn businesses.'

The final activity in the month will see some stores across the town open later to offer a quieter shopping experience on Wednesday, March 21.

Tom Harwood, Marks and Spencer store manager and board member of Discover King's Lynn, said 'We are aware that busy stores are not an enjoyable experience for everyone so with that in mind we wanted to create an evening where people can come along and enjoy a quieter shopping session. Marks and Spencer and glad to be a part of this and we would welcome other stores to join us in staying open for the evening.'
