A coroner has told a care home it needs to take action to prevent further deaths, after a man died when he was hit in the head with a fire door after a drill.

John Nichols, 85, died on June 18 last year at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King's Lynn.

And an inquest into his death in October found he died from bleeding inside the skull following a fall at his care home.

Now assistant coroner for Norfolk Johanna Thompson has written to King's Lynn and Eastgate Residential Care Home, in Austin Fields, King's Lynn, to tell them changes must be made.

Coroners have a duty to produce reports to prevent further deaths if something is revealed during the inquest which causes concern.

In her report Ms Thompson said Mr Nichols died 'as a result of sustaining a head injury [...] shortly after a fire drill at his care home, when a fire door closed between him and his carer whilst he was being assisted back to his room. The fire drills policy currently in place does not include sufficient safeguards to ensure that residents (and in particular those with dementia) are sufficiently monitored before, during, and after fire drills.'
