A Norwich care home has been placed into special measures after a damning report found a number of failings.

Northgate House on Links Avenue, Hellesdon, was inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in June and was found to be inadequate across all areas.

Inspectors found that in some cases, residents at the home had to wait up to 15 minutes to be assisted by care staff.

One person featured in the report said: 'There is not enough staff, some people shout and shout but no one comes and they end up trying to get up from their chair without help and sometimes they fall.'

Another person said: 'I just can't wait that long when I need to go to the bathroom.'

One person also reported that a member of staff had refused to help them from the bathroom.

According to the report, they were told to 'wait until the next shift started.'

The inspection found that the provider was in breach of eight regulations of the Health and Social Care Act 2008.

Inspectors also reported that the premises was unhygienic, with a soiled bath chair lift, stained cushions and dirty wheelchairs all found at the home.

The report into the home, which provides accommodation and care for 22 residents, stated that staff were not supplied with aprons or gloves for a four-day period.

Out-of-date food items were also found in the kitchen at Northgate House.

In an incident noted in the inspection report, one person at the home was given a tablet which was not theirs by a member of staff.

The resident refused to take the tablet and the error, which could have caused serious harm, was later confirmed.

As a result of the overall inadequate rating, the care home will be closely monitored under special measures.

Sue Howard, deputy chief inspector of adult social care at the Care Quality Commission said: 'It is essential that Northgate House takes action to address the concerns we identified at this inspection.

'All people living there have a right to receive care which is of a high quality, compassionate and safe.

'Since the inspection we have been working closely with the local authority to ensure that residents are not at risk.'

The care home was yet to respond to a request for comment at the time of writing.
