Community-minded people in Attleborough are being urged to come forward to get involved in a project to help improve the health of local residents.

An initiative aimed at reducing obesity, increasing physical activity, and helping people to make healthier food choices is being rolled out across Breckland following the success of the Thetford Healthy Town programme three years ago.

Residents in Attleborough and the surrounding area are now being urged to get involved in the formation of a new health advisory group to come up with ideas to boost the health and wellbeing of townsfolk.

A meeting will be held at Attleborough High School from 4.15pm on July 17 for people wanting to find out more about the project and identify ways of improving people's health.

It comes after healthy town groups were set up in Thetford, Watton, Swaffham and Dereham and officials from NHS Norfolk and Waveney hope the movement can spread across Norfolk if they can get lottery funding.

A sum of 5,000 has been set aside for the Attleborough scheme over the next year.

Carol Doherty, project manager for the NHS Norfolk and Waveney project, said the Thetford Healthy Town scheme involved more than 8,000 adults and children over an 18 month period in projects such as healthy eating sessions and dance classes.

'We have learnt that we do not need a lot of money to make it happen. Every town has the need, but in order to make it happen we need the right people who want to be on this group.'

'We are keen to involve as many people from Attleborough as possible, including members of the community, health professionals, volunteers, local businesses, councillors, school governors, and young people in order to understand the key health challenges within Attleborough and the surrounding areas. We may tailor projects to local needs,' she said.
