The chairman of trustees of The Genome Analysis Centre (TGAC) near Norwich has been recognised in the Queen's New Year honours list.

Professor Nigel Brown has been made an OBE for his services to science. Prof Brown is also president of the Society for General Microbiology and Emeritus Professor of Molecular Microbiology at the University of Edinburgh.

He said: 'I have always believed that it is not enough just to do science, but scientists also need to promote it and to help it thrive. I have been fortunate to work with teams of people of similar mind and I am delighted that my contribution has helped, and I hope that it will continue to do so through TGAC.'

Mario Caccamo, director of TGAC, based at the Norwich Research Park, said: 'I would like to congratulate Prof Brown on behalf of all TGAC staff for this award. We are extremely proud for this recognition and the impact that Nigel's career has made in science. We look forward to continuing working with Nigel in developing TGAC as a centre of excellence.'
