A new modernistic toilet block in north Norfolk has been announced as a double winner at a national ceremony.

North Norfolk District Council's (NNDC) new toilet block in Happisburgh won the Market Sector title for car parks, and the National Category Award for car parks at the National Loo of the Year Awards held in Birmingham on Friday .

The toilet block cost 67,000 to build and was funded through the Coastal Pathfinder project after the previous block had to be closed due to coastal erosion. It has subsequently been demolished.

Last month it was revealed NNDC's new loo blocks in both Happisburgh and Sheringham (East Promenade) had achieved Gold Awards in the 2012 Loo of the Year Awards.

The two toilet blocks, both built for NNDC by Thrower & Rutland of Felthorpe and designed by Stead Mutton & Griggs of Sheringham, were among 1432 entries from across the UK including Male, Female, Accessible, Changing Places and Family (baby change) loos, which required Loo of the Year inspectors to visit and judge over 5,000 individual toilets over the summer.

The inspection process covered 100 criteria including signage, dcor and maintenance, fixtures and fittings, cleanliness and overall management and customer care.

NNDC cabinet member for corporate assets, Rhodri Oliver, said, 'This is really excellent news. Working closely with the local community NNDC has helped breathe new life into Happisburgh. We've been on tenterhooks running up to the awards and for our toilets to have actually won the title Loo of the Year is a great relief.'
