A volunteer organisation which helps keep a watch on the coast and saves lives has received a funding boost to help relocate its lookout.

The £8,768 grant to Happisburgh Coast Watch group will enable them to move their base to a better spot just along the coast to Cart Gap which is set to cost about £22,000.

Station controller Fred Rendell said they were delighted with the funding from North Norfolk District Council's Big Society Fund.

He added: 'We have got to move from where we are as we are on the edge of the cliff and down a farm track which is quite dilapidated.'

They aim to be in their new premises by the end of the year.

The Big Society Fund was set up by NNDC to help build strong communities in the district. It aims to help communities to develop new and innovative projects which will improve their social and economic wellbeing.

Other community projects receiving grants from the Big Society Fund include: the provision of play equipment in Thorpe Market (£3,340), Corpusty and Saxthorpe (£5,000) and Trunch (£4,000), the provision of disabled access to Sheringham Sports Association's clubhouse (£10,000) and improved equipment to particularly benefit the community cinemas in Holt Community Centre (£5,000) and at Northrepps Film Club (£3,268).

Swanton Novers Village Hall and Amenities Committee was awarded £8,000 to assist towards the building of an extension to provide improved storage facilities, Wells Emergency Wardens were awarded £4,671 to provide improved radio communications and other emergency equipment – an issue that was highlighted during the course of last December's storm surge - while Great Snoring Social Club (£7,500) and the R B L Townshend Club in Fakenham (£2,000) were awarded funds to improve their facilities and thereby increase community use.
