A graffiti artist has launched a fundraising campaign to add a splash of colour to Great Yarmouth.

Carl Wright, who works under the name Stane, has been painting for more than eight years and is looking for support in his vision to brighten up walls in the town.

He has already been given permission by one local business to spruce up their walls and is hoping others will also get on board with his project, which he has called Stane on the Streets.

The 24-year-old says he got inspired after seeing offensive symbols daubed on walls near his town centre home.

He said: 'I've noticed some parts of the town are a bit run down, so what I want to do is give it a bit of colour and inspiration.

'Hopefully, if nothing else it could help to brighten up somebody's day, if they can look up and see bright colours around them.'

Stane, who lives in the town centre, is hoping that he can give people living in the town something extra to be proud of.

'People often say how some areas of the town aren't as well treated - that some places are rougher than others,' he said. 'However, I think if people see there is pride in the place, then perhaps they will respect it more.'

In the coming weeks, the artist is planning a new look for Bizarre Bizarre on Regent Street, designing an eye-catching mural which he says will be in the spirit of the shop.

Stane, who is a cleaner in his day job, decided to pursue his artistic dream when he was kicked out of his home at the age of 16.

He said: 'My sister is an arty person too, she used to love painting portraits, so I picked up a lot of my interest from, her.

'When I was 16 and living in the YMCA, my art was the only thing I really felt positive about so I decided to focus on that.'

He now hopes to raise as much money as he can to pay for spray cans and paints to help bring his vision for the town to life.

As well as hoping to redecorate the town, he is also preparing to showcase his talents in public. On June 10, he will paint in the Market Place, as part of the Great Yarmouth Arts Festival. He is also launching his own business, in which he will do commissioned work and lead workshops, as he looks to share his passion with others.

Stane's ever-growing cartoon project

Another project Stane takes particular pride in is one that he has been consistently been working on for the past two years.

What began as a nostalgia exercise grew and grew for the 24-year-old and has now turned into an intricate labour of love.

Since 2015, he has been sketching cartoon characters on a large canvas, which now features hundreds of well known images - from Bart and Homer Simpson, to Snoopy, Snagglepuss and Spongebob.

He said: 'To start with, I just drew some of the cartoons I grew up watching, then I started taking suggestions and it got bigger and bigger.

'It has turned into a bit of a talking point - people will see a character they remember and just reminisce. 'There are so many now that people will make a suggestion and they'll already be there.'

People can help contribute to his canvas by submitting a suggestion on his Facebook page.
