With thousands of people enjoying the opening day of the 44th Grand Henham Steam Rally, the event is continuing today (Sunday) at Henham Park, near Southwold – with a record number of steam exhibitors from around the country in attendance.

The rally committee launched a new initiative yesterday – with the chance for members of the public to get behind the wheel of a steam engine for the first time in the event's history.

The public steering sessions proved popular as they were showcased in the Len Murray Arena – and they are continuing this morning.

Helen Walker, rally chairman, said: 'We are hoping for good things again as there were lots of people here (on Saturday).'

Exciting displays, parades, unusual animal attractions and steam exhibits will all be showcased along with another new display this year – steam roller barrel rolling.

Hundreds of vintage, classic and modified vehicles and working steam engines are also on display alongside live music, the Ken Fox Wall of Death, a vintage fairground, children's entertainment and numerous trade stalls and crafts.
