They will not have any memories of the special event. But Norfolk's brood of Diamond Jubilee babies will never be able to forget that it happened.

Every little nipper who is born during the long weekend of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee will get a commemorative goblet to mark their birth.

Today, the first batch went into the kiln at Made in Cley, a north Norfolk business that produces hand-made pottery.

The limited edition stoneware goblets have been commissioned by Norfolk County Council to mark the Queen's 60-year reign.

Every baby born in Norfolk between June 2 and 5 will be entitled to one.

Parents will be presented with the boxed gift when they attend one of Norfolk's nine registration offices to register their new arrival. The offices across Norfolk will reopen on Wednesday June 6 following the Diamond Jubilee Bank Holiday.

Ian Mackie, deputy leader of the council and overseeing its Diamond Jubilee activities, said: 'Every child is a very special gift, but given the numbers we could only realistically commission something for those babies born during the Jubilee holiday weekend.

'We considered a range of ideas but we wanted something timeless, something made in Norfolk and unique. I hope these goblets will be treasured as handmade pieces of Norfolk art. I think they are going to be beautiful keepsakes.'

He added: 'Those born in Jubilee years, like myself, will know that it is a conversation piece, a common bond with a special celebratory year. I hope those born in 2012 will feel the same in years to come: proud to be British, and proud to be from Norfolk at a time of great patriotic celebration.'

Barbara Widdup, a partner at Made in Cley, said: 'This is a unique commission for us. We are often asked to produce specially-commissioned pieces and we also make many special orders for restaurants in Norfolk and beyond, but never anything as significant as this.

'We are delighted that Norfolk County Council has chosen us to make this historic piece and we hope that every family whose child is born over the Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend will be delighted with their goblet.'
