A planning inspector has overturned the decision to stop a supermarket being built on the site of a family business.
The proposal for the store on the site of Brundall Motor Company, in The Street, was turned down by Broadland District Council’s planning committee in November last year on road safety grounds.
EdgePlan Ltd, the Manchester-based agents for the new development, appealed the decision and have now been given the go-ahead to start work on the site.
Chris Blyth, 66, has run Brundall Motor Company for almost 40 years and had planned to close the company to retire and make way for the store.
But since EdgePlan Ltd won the appeal, he says he has heard nothing from the company and is unclear about the future of the 40-year-old business.
The planning inspector rejected any fears about traffic in his report, but people living in the village remain fearful about the shop’s impact.
John Wake, 64, of Brundall Gardens, led a successful campaign to prevent Tesco taking over the village’s Ram pub in 2013 and said the village still did not need another supermarket.
There is currently a Budgens on The Street, in the village, and retired Mr Wake said a second store would “split the village”.
He said: “This second supermarket will be totally unwarranted. There’s no reason for it and its situation on the on a blind corner is ridiculous.”
But planning inspector Nick Palmer dismissed the safety worry held by locals and the planning committee in his report.
He said: “The proposal would provide adequate visibility in both directions and the road has more than sufficient capacity to accommodate the extra traffic that would be generated.
“Vehicle speeds are low and turning movements into and out of the site would not be hazardous.”
EdgePlan Ltd could not be reached for comment.
