A Freedom of Information request has revealed the current food menus on offer for prisoners at HMP Norwich and HMP Bure on the former RAF Coltishall site.

At both jails prisoners are given options for lunch and dinner with cereals as standard for breakfast.

At HMP Norwich inmates have five choices at lunch and dinner and they change on a daily basis.

For example, on Thursdays they can pick from vegetable soup, corned beef sandwich, chicken slices sandwich, luncheon meat sandwich or cheese and onion sandwich for lunch. At dinner they then have a further five options; curried eggs, sausage toad in the hole, liver casserole, tuna salad or halal sausage toad in a hole.

Every evening prisoners are given an additional food item which is issued as a 'supper snack'.

Eleven miles away at HMP Bure, prisoners enjoy a completely different menu but still have a varied choice.

Lunches during the week include curried chicken cutlet, rib in a bap, Mediterranean pasta salad and roast chicken and stuffing. Come dinner time lentil hot pot, pasta carbonara and steak and kidney pie are all options for inmates.

Also on offer in the evening are a variety of sweet treats such as chocolate cake, vanilla and jam buns and apricot flapjack.

Commenting on prison menus, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice said: 'All prisoners are provided with a balanced, varied diet in line with the guidelines set by the Food Standards Agency to meet all their nutritional needs.

'Each prison produces their own menus and are required to offer a balanced, varied diet.

'Our menus are checked every year to ensure they comply with our national policy on the standard of prison food.'

The menu at HMP Bure also states that fresh fruit is on offer at every meal and at HMP Norwich prisoners are reminded that the soups come with sliced bread and not a bread roll.
