Following an increase in the number of catalytic converters stolen from vehicles in the Beccles area, a free event to help combat thefts is being held.

To provide local vehicle owners with valuable protection, Suffolk Constabulary has teamed up with Premier Garage in Beccles to offer free catalytic converter marking.

The event will take place between 10am and 4pm on Friday, October 20, at the garage in Gosford Road. Police officers will also be available to answer any other questions relating to vehicle security.

Speaking of the increase in thefts, a police spokesman said: 'Often commercial premises, that house a number of commercial vans, are targeted, as well as individual cars parked in streets and driveways. The removal of the catalytic converter can also result in a large amount of damage to the vehicle.

'One way to reduce the risk of theft is to have the catalytic converter marked with a unique reference number, that makes it traceable. A window in the vehicle is also annotated with the fact that it has been protected, as a warning to any thief.'
