An annual celebration of the older people in our communities is taking place this weekend.

Silver Sunday, on Sunday, October 1, aims to raise awareness of the social isolation which affects many people.

A number of free activities will be staged throughout the area as part of a national campaign to reduce loneliness.

Waveney District Council (WDC) is encouraging older residents to get involved and try something new.

Cllr Stephen Ardley, Waveney's deputy leader and cabinet member for communities said: 'As detailed in our Business Plan, we want our communities to thrive and for our older residents to feel supported, healthy and engaged.

'Silver Sunday is a great opportunity to celebrate our older people and ensure their invaluable contribution to society is not overlooked.'

He added: 'Along with partner organisations, we are working to combat social isolation and loneliness, which can have a devastating effect on people's physical and mental wellbeing.'
