Bruce Wegg, a Fellow of the London College of Music, died last night

The death has been announced today of Wisbech councillor and former mayor Bruce Wegg.

Mr Wegg was first elected to Fenland District Council in 1992 and he also became a member of Wisbech Town Council and later served as mayor.

He had a 20-year career in local politics which included serving as chairman of the Wisbech Town Council Planning Committee for several years. In 2004 he was elected Mayor of Wisbech.

Mr Wegg was also a member of several outside bodies and was as a school governor and trustee of the Wisbech and Fenland Museum and other local charities.

Outside of his political life he was a keen musician and was the organist at St Peter and St Paul's Church and a Fellow of the London College of Music.

He had been involved in choirs in Wisbech for many years, and had conducted choirs since his teens. He was also an experienced and qualified organist and also played the violin.

He was the holder of the Archbishop of Canterbury's Certificate in Church Music and received the award from the former Archbishop, Dr Robert Runcie, in the Chapel of Lambeth Palace, London.

In 2009 Mr Wegg was awarded a Fellowship of the London College of Music in recognition of his contribution to music in the Eastern region, particularly his work with choirs, over the years.
