Chasses, box steps and heel turns were phrases unknown to two doubtful dancers from Bradwell.

But after starting lessons for their wedding nine years ago, they found they were hooked, and they are now competing in competitions all over the country.

Jan and Clive Denby, of Church Lane, originally only wanted to avoid finding themselves red-faced at their wedding, taking their first lessons with Diane Mackenzie at the Tower Ballroom on Riverside Road, Gorleston, back in March 2006.

'What started off as 'a few' lessons to do a decent dance became something that we attended most Mondays and Thursdays each week, and once our confidence grew we started to attend the Saturday social evening dances that Diane held every week,' said Clive, 58.

A year on, the couple picked up silver and bronze medals in ballroom and Latin.

Diane sadly died in 2009, leaving the couple worried that they wouldn't be able to find a teacher as good as her. However, when they started lessons at Nigel and Larinda Smith's dance school at the Great Yarmouth Conservative Club, their love for the dance floor was rekindled.

'We will always remember our first night attending their lessons,' said Clive. 'We had thought we were quite good up to that point, but very quickly realised that we weren't very good at all. So apart from attending the group lessons and practice sessions every Monday evening, we started private lessons every Friday evening with Larinda.

'It was at this point that the beauty of dance became clear to us, and what had previously been a hobby now became an obsession with us striving to do better, which wasn't the easiest task as we are both in our 50s.

'After about two years we decided to start competing on the dance circuit around the country. That again was another eye opener, what looked good in the dance studio didn't necessarily transmit to the competition scene, and we realised that instead of being big fish in a little pond we were definitely little fish in a big pond.'

Now, after training hard, Clive and Jan are proud to have qualified for the third year running in the Champions of Tomorrow finals, held in Blackpool. This year they moved up a level and finished third in the competition.

They also took the crown and came first in the Stars of the Future contest in Brentwood, after again moving up a difficulty level.

But their proudest achievement this year was to compete in the Dance Promoters Association league, which takes place in various locations across the country throughout the year. The dancing duo ended up winning the competition, making them number one in the country, in their category, for 2015/16.

'It's unbelievable, especially as I'm 60 in two years,' said Clive. 'But it does mean that we now have to move up another level to intermediate, so the standard will become even tougher for future competitions.'

In the future, the pair are considering entering competitions further afield in Europe, but for now they're enjoying the social side that dancing brings.

Clive added: 'That's what makes it so nice, the friends we've made, I just wish we had started 30 years ago!'
