Firefighters have tonight rescued an elderly woman from a blaze at a Norfolk sheltered housing complex.

More than 20 firefighters were called to the fire at the Woodcote complex in Firs Road, Hethersett, at just before 7pm.

With the flat well ablaze, firefighters had to carry the woman, believed to be in her 80s, out of the flat.

The extent of her injuries is not clear, but she was taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital by ambulance.

Four fire crews went to the scene - from Hethersett, Carrow, Wymondham and Earlham.

The woman's home was the only one affected by the fire, but firefighters gave reassurance to the other tenants at the 56-flat complex.
