It is believed that the cat, called Rory, was shot at 4.20pm near Bellrope Close. He came running to his owner Abbi Saunt covered in blood.

Miss Saunt took Rory straight to vets where a scan was carried out and it discovered that the pellet had missed the main artery in his back by one millimetre.

Rory spent the night at the vets and Miss Saunt's partner Richard Alderton is hopeful Rory will be back home later on Friday.

He said: 'We have been told that we may be able to take him home today to see if he gets any better. If not he will then have to go back to the vets to have an operation to take the pellet out.

'He has a twin sister called Tiger and she has been whining since he has been gone so it will be quite a shock to here when she does see him.'

After Mr Alderton posted an appeal for information on Facebook, many people have got in touch, with some even offering to set up a Just Giving campaign to pay for the vet bills.

He said: 'Our insurance only covers our vet bills up to £500 and Rory's bill has already gone over that. If he does have to have the operation to remove the pellet costs could go over £1000.'
