A council walk-in service in north Suffolk is set for the axe.

Suffolk County Council and Mid Suffolk District Council today confirmed that the service in Eye will close from March 31 following a review by the two authorities.

The councils announced the closure of the Customer Service Direct facility in Cross Street, which opened in 2005. Their walk-in service in Stowmarket will also shut.

A spokesman for the two councils said: 'The number of people using these walk-in centres has fallen over the past few years and it is now not financially viable to keep the centres open when services are available in other ways; in particular via the internet and over the phone.'

The authorities added that residents can use their local libraries to access online services and advice and people could still make payments over the phone, online or through the postal service.
