Exploding barrels, Daleks and a bishop walking on custard were just some of the unusual scenes at Norwich Cathedral's science festival.

Thousands of people visited the historic building today to learn more about the scientific studies taking place across Norfolk.

During the day families also had the chance to take part in a variety of experiments within the cathedral grounds.

One of the more unusual displays saw the Bishop of Norwich, Graham James, demonstrate how it was possible to walk on custard without sinking.

Meanwhile, scientists from the UEA demonstrated the effects of a volcanic eruption by exploding a barrel filled with balls in the cathedral cloister.

The event was part of a two-week science festival being organised by the cathedral.

Dean of Norwich, the Very Revd Jane Hedges, said: 'We hope that these two weeks will provide many opportunities for people to exchange ideas, to learn more about the work of the many scientists who are among us and to think more deeply about the meaning of life, the way in which we engage with our environment and with all the people who share this earth.'
