Former Norwich City footballer Peter Mendham will deny the charge of attempted murder, his solicitor said today.

Simon Nicholls spoke to the media outside Norwich Magistrates Court this morning after a brief preliminary hearing during which Mendham's case was committed to crown court.

The charity worker and former midfielder was brought into the dock by two security guards and wore a pale blue jumper and combat-style dark trousers.

He spoke only to confirm his details and that he understood the charge, and silently wept after looking to his family at the back of the court room.

It is alleged that Mendham, 46, of Whitlingham Lane, Trowse, attempted to murder Charlotte Hyam on Wednesday.

No bail application was made and Mendham was remanded in custody until a crown court hearing on October 30.

Speaking after the hearing, Mr Nicholls said: “Peter Mendham has been charged with attempted murder.

“I can confirm that this is an allegation which will be denied and will be the subject of a not guilty plea at the crown court in due course.”
