Schoolgirls in Norwich were tonight waiting to hear if they had helped to set the world record for the biggest practical science lesson.

Pupils at Norwich High School for Girls, on Newmarket Road, took part in the attempt which involved more than 20 schools in the Girls Day School Trust.

Beginning at 11am, they all measured the acceleration caused by gravity during a one-hour class in multiple venues across the county.

While some pupils recorded the time it took a ball to fall from a set height to the ground, others timed a swinging pendulum.

Earlier this evening, the GDST said it felt confident the record had been broken but was waiting for confirmation from Guinness World Records.
