The good news continues for the University of East Anglia which has today broken into the top 20 of a university guide's rankings for the first time.

UEA has climbed from 27th place in the Complete University Guide league table last year to 20th this year.

It follows the Norwich campus' triumph in the Student Experience Survey last week, when it was named the best place to be a student, and a top-100 place in the CWTS Leiden Rankings 2013, which recognises excellence in research at institutions around the world.

The Complete University Guide's league table aims to influence the decision of those students applying for a higher education place later this year, ready to start studying in 2014.

It is the first time UEA has made it into the top 20.

Pro vice-chancellor for research, enterprise and engagement, David Richardson, said: 'The news that UEA has risen up this league table, hot on the heels of our first place ranking for student experience last week, can only strengthen our reputation as a top-class university offering the very best for our students and staff.

'We have been high in the rankings for a number of years, but to rise by seven places into the top 20 demonstrates the ongoing commitment to improvement in our 50th anniversary year and is testament to the hard work and commitment of everyone at UEA, from academic to support staff and our students.'

The Complete University Guide looks at a range of measures including entry standards, student-to-staff ratios, spending on academic services, graduate prospects, completion rates and overseas student enrolments to create its league table. It also includes separate listings for 67 subjects.

UEA appears in 31 subject tables and makes the top 10 for three of them.

The University of Cambridge retained top slot on the overall table, with Oxford regaining second place.

London School of Economics, Imperial College London and Durham University make up the remainder of the top five.

Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge is ranked 105th, up one place from 106th place last year.

The Complete University Guide said Norwich University of the Arts – the city's second university – was 'excluded as a single subject university'.

The UEA, which now attracts more than 15,000 students from across the world, this year celebrates its 50th anniversary.

A series of events to celebrate the milestone, including a festival weekend in September and the Fly literary festival for young people in July.
